Wild Campgrounds:
While there are established campgrounds with fees, the true magic lies in the free, dispersed camping areas around Stanley. Apps like Gaia (my wilderness sidekick) can help you find the perfect spot. Always be knowledgeable and aware what kind of land you are camping on.
Stanley Lake Campground: Lakeside tranquility with scenic Sawtooth Mountain views.
Mountain View Campground: Stunning views amidst the serene Sawtooth landscape.
Redfish Outlet Campground: Riverside oasis along the Salmon River.
Pettit Lake Camping: Remote charm beside the pristine Pettit Lake.
Fourth of July Road Camping: Captivating views in a prime location.
Luxe Lodgings:
The Redfish Riverside Inn: A log cabin retreat conveniently located in town with breathtaking views of the Sawtooths.
Stanley High Country Inn: Nestled across from Stanley Baking Co., this log cabin offers indoor and outdoor spaces with stunning peaks as your backdrop.
Can't-Miss Sights:
❀ Sunbeam Hot Springs: Located just northeast of Stanley, this easily accessible hot spring is a short walk down to the Salmon River. Easy to locate from highway 75, many signs pointing in the correct direction. Natural rock pools and man-made springs offer a soothing experience.
Salmon River Scenic Byway: 161 miles along highway 75 stretching from Stanley to Challis. Follows along the Salmon River, also known as the 'river of no return' known for its scenic beauty of pristine waters and jagged peaks. ≫Opportunity to visit and soak in the relaxing Challis Hot Springs
Redfish Lake: A colossal blue gem with waves rolling in from the wind and a dramatic mountain backdrop. Whether you relax on the shore or paddleboard on the water, it's a must-see.
Bonus Activities at Redfish Lake:
Lake Tours
Pontoon Boat Rental
Boat Shuttle Across the Lake (perfect for shedding a few miles)
Alturas Lake: Located south of Stanley, Alturas Lake is a serene alpine lake surrounded by forests. It offers opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and hiking, with trails like the Alturas Lake Loop.

Hikes for the Adventurous:
Farley, Toxaway, Twin, and Alice Lake Adventure Circuit: For the intrepid explorers, embark on a backpacking loop that promises breathtaking beauty. Beginning at the Tin Cup Hiker TH, we tackled this awe-inspiring loop over two days and one night. The first day involved a strenuous 13+ mile hike in a counter-clockwise direction, leading us to Twin Lakes. The following day, a more leisurely 7-mile trek took us out. We even indulged in a bit of lakeside relaxation, opting to hike in our bikinis covered by oversized shirts for easy access to the water. While designated campsites abound at each lake, finding a flat spot can be a challenge. (If I were to do this again, I would extend the adventure to include Imogene Lake, making it a 3-day, 2-night trip.)
Alice Lake Out & Back Hike: Ideal for those seeking to experience the stunning beauty and rugged peaks of the Sawtooth area without the commitment of backpacking.
❀ Sawtooth Lake: Begin your adventure at the Iron Creek Trailhead, where this exhilarating hike spans approximately 10 miles with awe-inspiring elevation gain. Arriving at Sawtooth Lake, reward yourself with a refreshing dip in its crystal-clear waters after conquering the ascent. Offering panoramic vistas of rugged peaks, this trail is a beloved favorite among hikers, so be sure to arrive early at the trailhead to secure your spot!

Sawtooth Wilderness Loop: (For experienced backpackers) What makes this adventure truly exciting is the freedom to craft your own unique route. This isn't just one predefined loop but a series of interconnected trails, allowing you to design your own epic backpacking journey. With an average distance of over 60 miles, expect to spend about a week exploring, depending on the sights you choose to include along the way.
Hell Roaring Lake: A moderate hike tucked away in the pristine wilderness, unveiling breathtaking views of crystal-clear waters embraced by the majestic peaks of the Sawtooth Mountains.
❀ Goat Lake Hike: Setting off from the Iron Creek Trailhead, this challenging 9-mile round trip hike is tailored for the adventurous spirit. Brace yourself for a demanding trek—not for the faint of heart. However, the payoff is unparalleled: a turquoise alpine lake embraced by rugged peaks. Be prepared for scrambling and navigating loose rocks at the summit. While we encountered fellow adventurers backpacking along this trail, I personally wouldn't recommend it.

❀ I obtained permits for all the hikes either at the trailhead
or along the trail. A park ranger mentioned that these permits are required for
both day hikes and overnight stays due to the area's increasing popularity in
recent years. They serve mainly to track visitor numbers and provide
essential information about the trails. ❀
Where Culinary Magic Happens:
❀ Stanley Baking Company & Cafe: A charming log cabin offering breakfast and lunch options along with a delightful selection of homemade baked treats. Be prepared for a likely queue, but trust me, the wait is absolutely worth it.
Mountain Village Resort Restaurant: For some hearty American fare.
Peaks and Perks: Delicious coffee and sandwiches. Whether you've got some time to hang or stopping for a quick sandwich for the day it will sure not disappoint.
Papa Brunee's: A local-recommended pizza joint .
